Has my respect. Didn’t lean on outside songwriters. Mostly wrote all of his material which is a lot to ask in Country/western music
Some of his songs are damn cheesy but he had some bangers. Shoulda Been a Cowboy is one of my favorite 90s country songs and How Do You Like Me Now is also great.

Modern country stars - with a few notable exceptions - all seem like parodies of each other with the same old cliches.
When you look back at the golden era of country in the 60s and 70s, Merle, Johnny Cash, Waylon, Willy, Hank Jr, etc, all had very distinctive styles from one another.
Waylon, Willie, Merle, Kris Kristofferson, Hank Jr were all great songwriters.
