Jack Z. is giving Ackley such a long leash because it was his first pick as Seattle GM and Ackley went 2nd in the draft.
Ackley is perilously close to 2,000 MLB at-bats and if you perform by then, it becomes highly doubtful you'll ever be more than a AAAA player (but one who has already made $7.3 mil). He has about 100 ABs left until he gets to 2,000.
Another question is who do the M's call up if the trade, send down (if he has options left), or DFA Ackley? James Jones for another lefty bat but who also provides elite speed (27 SBs for the M's last year against 1 CS)? Romero or even Guti could be other OF options too.

Calling Ackley AAAA is generous.
He was an exciting prospect, a 2B that hits and has the approach to the plate that he had in college is so valuable. Things went downhill quickly. First, they found out he couldn't play 2B so they made him a corner outfielder. He was never a power hitter so already his value went way down. His bat never materialized so really he has just become a shit tier player.
I still think back to the end of that season when the m's picked themselves up by their bootstraps to finish by winning 2 straight series and thus securing the #2 pick in the draft. Strausburg probably wouldnt have worked out here anyways.

I thought for sure Strasburg was ours. That was the most Mariner week of all time.

All they had to do was lose, and they couldn't even do that right
Ackley was supposed to be George Brett but with less power.
Now he's treading the line of a utility-player unless he turns it around fast.

Agree with most of this. I don't agree he couldn't play 2nd. He never looked super smooth out there but he made all the plays and his defensive numbers were very good. I think he was plenty adequate as a second baseman. As a left fielder he's pretty bad.
