Premium Caple Content: Newcomers & Greyshirts #APAGSad

Newcomers arrive at UW for LEAP, summer school

Anyway, below is a list of each incoming Huskies football player who is either participating in LEAP — freshmen only — or is otherwise enrolled in summer school. The only exceptions from UW’s 2015 signing class are long-snapper A.J. Carty (Servite High School/Santa Ana, Calif.) and defensive end Myles Rice (Bush High School/Richmond, Texas), both of whom have reportedly decided to greyshirt, delaying their enrollment until at least January. Rice, you might recall, tore his anterior-cruciate ligament in October.

*Denotes preferred walk-on

As you can see, the Huskies have added a walk-on quarterback — Anthony Berg, who played at Kamiak High School before a two-year career at Saddleback College. He appeared in six games last season and completed 22-of-39 passes for 328 yards, a touchdown and four interceptions in limited duty. So, there will be five quarterbacks on the roster when preseason camp begins in August.

Another interesting name on the list is Connor Griffin, who spent the last two seasons as a walk-on for the Gonzaga basketball team. He was an all-state receiver at Lake Oswego and had scholarship offers to play football at Portland State and Northern Colorado, according to his Gonzaga bio, which lists him at 6-foot-4 and 212 pounds.

It is cool to see how many walk-ons this staff is getting. 7 for this class and I think they had 5 last year.

Increases the overall depth of the program ...

If you can get walk-ons in the program that have enough quality that should a terrible injury bug happen and then at a point where the decision is to either play the walk-on or burn a redshirt, it is definitely a plus if the walk-on is solid enough to allow the redshirt year to be preserved.

I believe I've heard someone say before something to the effect that a strong walk-on program is a symptom of a successful overall program.
