Portal Thoughts

It's a good thread. The portal seems as light this year as it has been since it truly started. In the amount of top players in it and the quality of players. I think the lack of coaching changes, the running out of covid years, and a possible at least slight change in mindset on it have led to that.
You ideally clearly want to build your team with high school recruiting and plug and play some portals guys in there to fill some holes or if you can get the rare elite guy who goes into the portal. QB will also now forever be transfer heavy given only one can play at a time anywhere so you're frequently gonna have good ones looking to transfer.
Unless you're a team like Ohio State last year, UW in 2023, Texas recently, etc, who has a national championship caliber base of HS signed players who just needs the right portal guys to get them over the edge, it seems like relying on the portal is a short-term gain but possible long term loss instead of just playing a HS signed player.
Penn State is trying that in 2025, they had to portal in WRs because they missed so badly there and possibly a LB or 2 but they are mostly homegrown or portals in after a kid has decided to transfer after his first year. Franklin will ensure they fall short butt still
Penn State has the vibe of a lesser version of 2023 UW, Michigan, Texas, Oregon or 2024 Ohio State, etc. They're kind of alone in that this year, which means Franklin will find a way to maybe win one playoff game.

Not a good comparison to say the shortcomings of NFL teams that rely on free agency will also apply to NCAA teams who over-rely on the portal. NFL rosters have a salary cap.

Yes, though something about Drew Allar makes me think he won't be able to run it back (getting to the Conference Championship game).
They do have a relatively easy schedule (will play only 3 teams that be ranked pre-season).

It's funny that it has already been forgotten that he won two whole playoff games last year… because it was against SMU and Boise. LOL.
Yes, he might be able to win a single top 5 matchup, maybe even in the playoffs!

I'm not super bullish on Allar. Who is really that proven better though? Maybe if Franklin gets back to the B10CG and he's running for nearly 9 yards a carry he can let Allar cut it loose less this time?

That was unconscionable. They could have run for 400 yards on the Ducks, but they went full Sark and put their season on Allar’s shoulders. Absolutely retarded.

Watch Franklin do it again this year in whatever their critical games are. I'm convinced that he's dead set on proving everybody that "his way of doing things" is the correct way and forcing his quarterback to be something he's not is part of that.

Now that Ryan Day popped off and won a natty, Franklin is the unquestioned king of winning just enough to not get fired.

Jedd told his players he only will replace through the portal after someone leaves, he won’t go shopping and then replace them. That’s a great message if he sticks to it
Except he did exactly that to Thad Dixon when he went after Taccario Davis in the portal
Disagree I guess. He wanted to keep Dixon and move him to the slot. Davis is better suited to outside. The idea is supposed to be to add good players that make the team better. Dixon bitched out because he didn't GAF about that.

he knew he was a superior player to prysock and said forget this. Don't blame him but it sucks.

Positions can always change during camp and during the season. If the defense was better off with Dixon outside and Prysock moved or coming off the bench that's how it would've played out.
The new norm. Seems it's not even frowned upon anymore.

I was pissed about Dixon but I’m also drinking the Rashawn Clark koolaid. Methinks we’re gonna be just fine back there.👌

I like Dixon more than Prysock and think he fumbled running off to the mess that is Belichick in 2025. Dixon was much more physical than Prysock (see BS targeting against Pedo State).
Can't win them all though and the Tacario for Dixon trade was most likely an upgrade.

Yep. I didn’t think Prysock’s skills were worthy of the Book of Ephesians when it says “23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.”☝️☝️☝️🧐
