When he was hired at Stanford? Because when he was hired at Norte Dame and especially Washington, there was a ton of objection to the hire because Willingham had by then proven to be incapable of being a major college football head coach. He underperformed at Stanford and then was fired by a school famous for not firing people.
Danny must have been living in a cave at the time because the hiring of that fraud instantly escalated the Husky fan civil war (Posis vs. Negas).
I also remember the daily “Ty the Fraud Fact of the Day” on Groz and Gas. That started as soon as that program killing fraud was hired at Washington, months before he lost his first of many games. Many Huskies fans remember how awful he was at Stanford with that loaded roster given to him from Bill Walsh, and were very vocally displeased at the horrible hire.
Wasn’t Danny a sports reporter back then?
I will heartily admit that I wasn’t anti-Willingham until I saw the team actually play. When he was hired, I wasn’t happy but I did think he might be able to recruit.
Yeah, I became a half brain real fast.

Yeah I wasn't horribly against it. He was DOA when they lost in Seattle to Air Force though and I'm pretty sure the guy who killed them was some white receiver from eastern Washington or something.
I was in the dawg pack for hoops when he was hired. They brought him out to meet the students and people only got excited once he started handing out free pizza. No one was excited about the hire.
