I know you aren't supposed to judge a book by their cover but every time I look at that picture of Kohler I'm always thinking no wonder he was a total fucking bust.
I know the Doog narrative will be injuries but he was fucking terrible before that. In his defense the coaching was awful but some guys have it and some don't. You can tell he doesn't fucking have it.
When Petersen talks "OKG" I always think he wouldn't have gone after Kohler as he would have known from the beginning the kid was a puss.

I mostly agree with you but when your best season as an offensive lineman is your true freshman season, coaching plays a big part in that. And unfortunately that was a common theme under Seven. Normally a program expects to get better each season because their players improve. Our raw talent got better but with the exception of a few guys most got worse. I'm excited to actually witness a coaching staff developing players. Just wait till Ivan gets a hold of him!

Kohler's best season was his freshman season because he played RG, not RT. Kohler didn't have to footwork to be a Pac-12 OT and it showed with how slow he was getting out to defend a rushing DE and how he struggled to outflank defenders on sweeps. He was decent in runblocking but a liability in pass-defense, especially on the edge.
He probably would've been a decent OG moving forward but Porter was more physical upfront and got better push and Tanigawa is better in space, especially when pulling a guard. I suppose with Porter's retirement, he could've filled in nicely but the coaching staff fucked up and tried to transition him to RT because they forgot to recruit the position in their first 3 years.
That being said, I hope we don't have a shitty OL coach who tries to teach every player every position so they can shift the entire line around when one player gets injured. Imagine having some consistency and training the players to be experts at their assigned positions rather than making a mediocre jack-of-all-trades out of everyone.

He also did a Reddit AMA last year and I think he talked about playing a lot of online video games in his free time. That, along with the haircut makes me wonder if he ever wanted to play college football.
