Everyone talked shit about Watty ... yeah, he didn't exactly set the world on fire ... but ....

- he was a 5th round pick
- made the Broncos final roster as the 2nd string Center. Made the fucking roster!

- didn't even get fucking drafted.
- just got cut and looking for a job. Maybe those Stanford connections can get him hooked up. At least Leatherwood got released too ...

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Should have seen this coming with Fozzy when he was at the 2016 Stanford game and still wanted to go to Stanford. Should have been like Charles Frederick when he was at the 2000 Miami game and was like how do I not play here?

At best, guess he just really wanted to play school more than football and hope that works out.

Shelton had worked his way to backup center for the Rams the past couple of seasons. Good on him. Was always a tough player and I'm not surprised.

With the amount of UW players like Watty who got drafted and how well UW UDFAs have done in the league recently makes me think people around the league thought the Pete guys make good pros. Too bad it was racist. I hope the players and families who listened to that pitch and went elsewhere have all been drafted and made the most of their pro careers.

And the best of the bunch at the time was Adams who never returned to form(still got a little cup from the Bills).

Edit: It's worth noting how stacked 2016 was. It's crazy to say, but they under achieved in a lot of ways. We didn't realize how broken Pete's offense was until the bottom fell out.

SC and Bama were both winnable with better gameplan.

There was two positions they missed on, big WR and RG. N’keal Harry and Sean Harlow they had just missed on IIRC and those two may have put them over the top. You could argue a pass rusher but they got by with what they had
 
Forgot to mention that I think the underlying reason(s) why Watty is on the final roster is because of his positional flexibility based on his:

- durability through college = reliability. Something like the old saying that "the best ability is availability"
- he played through the whole line in college plus he iirc settled for more center reps at the end of his college career? That's a bigger plus.
- in today's NFL where maximizing your roster for the best chance for team success, being a GM is like being a top shelf stats guy (moved away from the old school Jon Gruden types) ... having a Watty type on the o-line gets you extra gravy/brownie points. You probably should one type of player that has those qualities for each major position group.
- lastly, this leads into the I/R management strategy.

the "not great but not bad" skillset of Watty gave him greater protection from roster changes compared to the likes of Alex Leatherwood.

Leatherwood probably a degree better than Watty, from an athletic standpoint, but his poor play got his QB killed more often hence Leatherwood being released - because they just can't afford brain farts leading to a QB IR situation. Guess who drafted Leatherwood? ... Gruden.

“I’m happy I’ll have a doctor with a Stanford education,” or something like that

… if this isn’t an iron law, it should be. Your worst player can’t be your QB. You will underachieve. If your best player is your QB, over achievement is common. Too many instances to even mention.

Yes, Pete’s offense sucked, but the QB made it much worse.

Loved those OL combined with amazing blocking TEs in Dissly and Sample and not a shock that's when the team overall was winning games.

Crazy thing it was super young in 2016.

LT Adams (pre-injury was so different) - So. - I'm not sure if he was the Top 10 pick he was getting mocked at but have to think he gets drafted and has a better career if he could have left after 2016.

LG Eldrenkamp - Sr. - Good college OL. Looks like he'll finish with like 5 practice squad ups in the league.

C Shelton - Sr. - Super underrated really good college OL and should have been drafted. Has worked his way to starting guard for the defending Super Bowl champs.

RG Harris - Fr. - He was probably fine against everyone other than Alabama's nightmare DL. Eventual 5th round pick.

RT McGary - So. - Young here but eventual first rounder and best OL in the Pac-12

TE Dissly - Sr. - Basically was like a first-team All-Pac-12-level blocker extra on the line.

TE Sample - So. - Basically Dissly but younger.
