You have to consider the land mass difference between the 2 states as well. You draw the boundaries on a state the size of Oregon and you're bound to capture a few good locations.

This. People from Portland love to talk shit on Seattle and people from Seattle love to talk shit on Portland. What that really means is that they probably haven't lived or traveled much outside of the NW. Spend some time extended time in the other major cities (aside from Austin, Denver, and San Diego--which are the only ones I personally would put up there with the NW) and you'll realize how great both Portland and Seattle are in comparison.

Seattle is an international city with a fuckton of business and construction going on. It feels like living in a big city to live here and work downtown

Portland is what you get if you combined Tacoma, Eugene, and Spokane. Fun to visit and go to clubs in. Not a big city feeling. Walking around feels like youre in Tacoma.

Eastern Oregon's got Bend (technically central but east of the mountains so whatever), Steens Mountain, the Alvord Desert, the Wallowas, the Elkhorns, Newberry, the Oregon Outback, and the Columbia River also... The list goes on. For outdoorsy, Eastern O has Eastern WA licked.

As someone who grew up in E Wa. I’ve got to check you on both the Selkirks that are actually in Idaho and Canada and the Walla Walla swill. As far as Eastern Or and Eastern Wa, the swill is a wash. However the Willamette Valley is right up there with Sonoma in quality of wines nowadays. And Central Or has its own Roosevelt in Billy Chinook.
 
You all laugh, but this was a real live debate over at Doogman years back. It morphed into a state level debate where people were comparing / competing over which state had the better geographical topography and greater natural beauty. CastlerockRon/royotis was throwing down for Washington, arguing that Oregon just didn't have an answer for Mt. Rayonier. There were protracted arguments between morons over whether Olympic National Park was better than Crescent Lake, etc. etc.

This literally went on for months and people were taking it seriously.

I have to go with Oregon from a geological / topography perspective. I prefer Bachelor to any of the WA ski resorts although Seattle is way closer to Whistler. Oregon's wine country is way better than Washington's. Oregon coast is better too. The Bend / Sunriver area is fantastic.

Bachelor has way better vertical than either Crystal or Baker. They get plenty of snow. Far shorter lift lines than Crystal on the weekends.

Snow quality is much better as well. It’s the only resort in the Cascades that gets snow that resembles true powder.
