We're seeing hard hitting journalism. I usually don't click this stuff because that's how the money Oregon is stuffing into these sad dying publications like foie gras ducks gets justified but I'm glad I got to see a quote from Tez Johnson that they practice like it's a national championship game. Well, he's never fucking played in one so what does that mean?
They should be good. What that ends up being is probably not #2 in the country and serious contender for anything.

They're a legit Top 10, possibly Top 5 team but their biggest boon is that the rest of the country doesn't look that strong and QB is mega weak and Gabriel playing in a 5th full years a start which shouldn't happen is a great option. They looked better going in last year so it's obnoxious the paid content shit is screaming so psychotically loud right now about this team .
Ohio State, Texas, Georgia, Ole Miss, Penn St, and Missouri all deserve to be ranked ahead of them.
Basically they're going to benefit just as much from UW and Michigan unloading into the NFL and Lincoln Riley as much as they've set themselves up.

If I were to rank teams now I'd probably go: 1. Ohio State 2. Georgia 3. Texas 4. Alabama 5. Oregon. Ohio State is the only one I feel like has a ton of NFL talent that's also proven itself in the depth chart, but they're probably limited at QB. I'd also hate for EE and JTT to win a natty because they had to come back for an extra year because they were overrated NFL prospects.
Gabriel at QB is what will ensure they're still good, while also not being good enough at the QB position to win it all.
I don't think he's that special but what other QB in college football would you not say that for in 2024? Is Will Howard or Carson Beck or Ewers going to beat him in a due?
They would all beat him in a shootout, but more importantly is that I don't think Gabriel is a dude who will lead the game winning drive down 4 with a minute to go.
Trust me I'd like to shit on him as much as possible but isn't that exactly what he did against Texas last year?
No one here is going to vouch for them because of Sark, but Texas feels like a team that took their lumps and has the talent and confidence to really break through. Ewers isn't terrible, UW just weirdly knew how to stop them similarly to Oregon at the end of the year.

I was surprised looking at Texas' depth chart they lost a massive amount of their proven talent from last year. They're gonna have to have new stars. Very doable but still something they have to prove.
Kind of a fluky game, IMO. I recall Ewers sucking and I think Texas had 2 or 3 turnovers to none for Oklahoma (unless you count the punt block TD they gave up). I'm not really convinced that Gabriel is going to light up the Big 10. Gabriel had a few clunkers last year that would cost Oregon wins in conference play if he does that again this year.
Does make me think it's pretty stunning Nix never had even a not good game at Oregon in two years outside of the opener against Georgia's nightmare defense. The media circle jerkers narrative is that Gabriel just automatically is Nix, but that's a really high fucking bar to replicate and Nix' insane consistency is a massive part of why Oregon was hard for anyone other than UW to beat the past two years.

Penn St. doesn't even need to win a big game at this point, but at least be competitive in one. They backdoored into a one score game last year against Ohio St. Other than that, their other 4 losses have been by more the one score. Oregon hasn't won a big game under Lanning either, but their losses are by 3,4,3, and 3. If you want to put Ohio St, Texas, Ole Miss, Georgia, Missouri, and even Michigan and Alabama ahead, I can accept that. But Penn St. is a bridge too far for me.
I just think Penn St is a little bit better. Again Oregon lost 8 guys to the NFL and all their leaders. Tez Johnson is a little receiver, everyone in the B1G has a decent back so why do I care about Jordan James.

Dismissing Penn State the way people do (including UW fans) is silly. They've lost five games in the past two years. Four of those have been to Ohio State/Michigan and both were close last year when those teams might have been the two best teams in the country, then a loss last year to Ole Miss in the Peach Bowl when I assume Penn State had a lot of guys sit out.
I think Oregon and Penn State going in are pretty comparable and I still think Penn State is one of those programs the incoming Pac-12 schools don't realize how deep they are with a different kind of raw talent.

Did they improve at skill positions? That’s where they were weakest. I remember they almost lost to Indiana because of their lack of weapons on the outside.
I don't think so. I think their big addition was a big, slow overrated former 10-star recruit from Ohio State. They still have the two productive RBs but their per-carry averages were bad last year.
Penn State's big claim for being good next year is the offensive coordinator is new (again) and this year it will be different! The RBs will be good and the O Line will be decent, but they lost their only good WR and the tOSU transfer is bleh. PSU is hoping there is a Denzel Boston type player to emerge this year. They are also counting on the QB's stats - which look like JJ McCarthy's - meaning that he is good and will take a step next year, but the eye test is always that he sucks, especially when it matters.
