Paris 2024 Olympics officials told Brazilian surfer João Chianca, 23, in early July that he must remove a Christ the Redeemer motif from his surfboard.
He is one of the favorites to win a gold medal in Teahupo.
The surfboard allegedly violates "Olympic rules". Article 50 reads: "No type of political, religious or racial demonstration or propaganda shall be permitted in any Olympic venue." The Christ the Redeemer statue is the landmark of Rio de Janeiro. Chianca is from the state of Rio de Janeiro.
Chianca was informed that "the painting is not allowed in the Olympic Games because Christ is a religious figure". He understood that "the [highly politicised] Games have strict rules and [allegedly] focus on total neutrality."

Douglas Murray has the best, most well thought-out, take on all of this, and it's this: as a faith implemented with extremism or even orthodoxy, it is incompatible with the west. One of the most fundamental tenets of our philosophical view is that we have to accept being offended, and we do not countenance retributive violence in the face of being offended as normal or acceptable behavior.
One of the biggest problems we have with Islam and the countries who follow the same is that we in the west try and judge what happens there through a lens of morality that is not shared by those people. It's like when you tell a Japanese tuna fisherman to avoid ensnaring dolphins in his nets. He doesn't get the problem. At. All.
Our issue is that we think we're going to bridge these two worlds by appealing to some sense of love or reason amongst men who wish to live in peace and prosperity. No, we're not. We are dealing with a people and a culture that do not share our most basic moral code. There is nothing there on which to base even a discussion UNLESS you have a very large gun pointed at the other guy's nose. And that, my friends, is why Israel must persist. They are the buffer between us and that world.
