New? That building was built nearly 30 years ago. Basically all arenas are built in cities, not outside of them. The NBA is not the NFL. It's cited where it is because that's where the city is located.
I remember KJR carrying Blazers games after the Sonics left. That lasted all of about 15 minutes. Nobody gives a shit about that meaningless franchise. I'm sure hundreds of white trash in Battle Ground are big fans, though.

It would have been much easier to build the new arena well outside of Portland.

If Paul Allen wanted the blazers to be Oregon centric, their arena would have been built in Beaverton, Tualitin or HV/Oregon City. Hope this helps.

Wasn’t Clark County the fastest growing county in the Portland Metro area at the time? So if growth was happening north and west, why wouldn’t you keep playing in the middle. I bet there was also money and political reasons to stay near downtown Portland.

Hard to say how it will turn out.
