The fact we're being gashed up the middle tells me there is no amount of in-game adjusting that will make a difference.

I don't think that is true. There are issues and on a man to man level we may be out gunned and we may not be in a position to dominate the lines but no longer being constantly gashed should be possibly achievable. Not saying it will but it's not impossible
