I was wondering the same thing, but I believe if the Saints touch it first, it comes back to where they touched it so there was really no danger. It's one of those obscure/weird rules. Boobs? Your expertise is needed.

Once the punting team has touched the ball the receiving team can pick it up and advance it. If the receiving team were to fumble and it was recovered by the punting team the ball would be returned to the spot that the punting team originally touched it. House money.
