@bananasnblondes - normally I agree with you. This is not a normal off-season hire.

The staff and the recruiting is really big for Oregon this year. This is supposed to be around a 30 recruit class to get the roster up to 85. If Taggart had left after next year wouldn't be as big for continuity because we were going to take a smallish class ~20 next year.

There's a decent argument to be made to give Cristobal or Leavitt a shot at the head job, and essentially a tryout. There aren't any good hires out there. The coaching carousel has been exceedingly crazy this year. Oregon swung for the fences last year, and put together one of the best staffs in the country to go with the Taggart hire. The head coach's play calling was one of the weakest points of last season.

If either of these guys sucks, well, I'm not sure Sumlin would do a whole lot better. Show them the door after year 2-4 and find a real coach with adequate time to pre-position the new coach and staff rather than scrambling to make a hire in less than a week. In this economy.

Taggart leaving definitely hurt Oregon. So let's mitigate the harm.

A lot of words to say that Oregon Football only cares about retaining 2/3 of a good class and damned everything else beyond that.

Oregon Football isn't dead but it won't win a Pac 12 North Championship in the next 5 years. You can cook that shit.
 
Cristoballs may be great, but if they hire him they have dropped any pretense of being a serious player in CFB and gone with the failed assistant from within hire. Just epic fail DUcks.

I can't believe this is actually happening. Rob Mullins is the new Pat Haden! You had fucking Jeff Tedford available who took Cal as high as they could go recruiting against USC and UCLA, developed Aaron Rodgers, won Pac-10 coach of the year, and just took a 1-11 Fresno State team and turned them into a 9-4 team with two of those losses being to UW and Bama and one being to Boise St. in the Mountain West conference championship game after they had beaten them the week before.

You had Bryan Harsin available who has kept Boise State going years after Petersen left and just won the Mountain West conference championship.

For fuck sake you hired Mario Cristobal who's best season at Florida International was 8-5. Who went to Bama after being fired as a low level head coach and then got demoted from O-line coach to TE coach. All because he's a good guy and the players and recruits like him? How did this guy fail his way into a Pac-12 job? Fuck man. These past two weeks have been glorious.

Here's the thing. Blue bloods can afford to screw around in difficult situations a little. See THE Ohio State ca. 2011 after they had to let go Tressel. They promoted Fickle, the loyal assistant for a year because there was nobody available, went 6-6, then got rid of him and got Meyer, then immediately went 12-0.

Oregon is just bumbling along and panicked. They clearly have no plan or contingency other than..."Uhhh what, he really went to FSU? Uhhhh duhhh, what do we do? Uhh who's available? Uhh duhhh why don't we just promote Mario? He's pretty good with recruits. Hopefully it'll work out." It's only December 8th. There's plenty of time to find a coach. You sacrifice a few recruits to get the right one, or at least something better than Sun Belt rejects. You can build up next year's class, get JCs etc. If it's the right guy, he'll be capable of doing that. This is why Oregon is amateur hour, still.
