That's too bad, but he should consider himself lucky. I wasn't expecting Sark to honor his scholarship after he greyshirted last year (because Sark did that a few times at UW). But he got in with Petersen and will now be able to get a college degree at no cost (besides the back injury).

Doesn't really change our depth at NT since I expected him and Gaines to both redshirt.

I love how Petersen selected two lineman to be UW representatives. That was definitely by design.

That kid never should have been offered a scholarship. He was probably not even one of the 50 best players in the state of Washington out of high school and was a borderline Portland State/ Eastern WA level player. He could have gone to PLU and been pretty productive (especially as the only player of color on the team).

Even a guy on Sark's staff said later on in the recruiting cycle that they wished they could go back and re-evaluate some of the kids they offered early (this kid and Sammie Long from Lakes). Long got the hint. Had he stayed on the team he probably would have quit later on when he was buried on the depth chart. Yeah he has size, which can get you somewhere in 2A high school football but he wasn't a talented football player. Sark didn't have the balls to tell him he wasn't good enough so he filibustered him with this grey-shirt plan. One has to wonder if Pete didn't show up and say "look kid, it's not gonna happen. You've had a few injuries. Let's just go with that."

There is a fair chance that is what happened. He's retiring after a few weeks of Spring ball. Even of he is injured, if he was any good, a retirement wouldn't be announced this quickly.

I'm thinking that's what happened too, though the press release does make it sound like this is something that discovered recently. Couple that with the fact that Petersen wants him around the program still, which wasn't said about McDaniels or Kohler or any of the other recent retirees:

"...will retire from football for medical reasons after doctors discovered a serious back injury..."

"Petersen said Bryant will remain in the program in some capacity..."

This isn't a cut-and-dry ass.door.out situation, but it's probably Petersen telling him he won't see the field much and Jaime wanting to be a Husky all his life and doing anything he can. Even though he won't be a Husky, I'm still happy with how Petersen handled his recruitment. Sark would've pulled his scholarship this last year probably forced him to go to some shitty JC somewhere in the south sound area and whatnot. Now, the kid gets to attend UW which has been his dream all along.
 
The classy thing to do with a kid that you don't want taking up a scholly in your program is to make him do the equivalent of TA work while covering his scholarship under the disguise of a "medical redshirt."

The hints that Petersen gets it are abound in ABUNDANCE ...
