My biggest complaint with Miles

Yeah, he has a fucking noodle arm. Yeah he seems to have no idea when to run, or how. Yeah he takes too many sacks. Yeah he gets pulled for 35 yard Hail Mary's (LOL!).

I can live with most of that. He's not a good QB, but he's put up surprisingly decent numbers. For all my frustration with the offensive coaching staff this year, they probably got better production out of Miles than they should have. He's never going to be great. I could probably tolerate him for another transition season if it wasn't for one thing.

He is the worst hurry up QB I've ever seen. At any level.

The hurry up offense is when a QB's instincts, heart and leadership really show. There isn't time for the staff to coach your every move, so we get to see what the QB is really made of. Does he make good decisions? Does he play with a sense of urgency? Does he show good awareness of situation and clock? Does he have what it takes to rally the team around him and convince them we're going to win this shit against all odds? Does he know when to throw it, where to throw it, when to spike it, when to throw it away, when to run? Does he fight for every first down to stop the clock to move the chains? Does he look like he has a fucking clue?

Miles fails every one of those tests. Horrifically. When OSU missed the FG last night I prayed we'd send another QB into the game. Once I saw it was Miles I knew it was over. Sure Williams would probably have thrown a pick 6, and Lindquist would have probably thrown four straight overthrows over everybody's head, but at least they would have looked like they gave a damn.

Miles looked like he was about to light up his fifth blunt of the night. Not real sure of himself, not real excited, and damn sure not in a hurry.

I give the coaching staff a bit of a pass with Miles' production because to get what they did out of a guy whose instincts are that bad is pretty impressive. What scares the shit out of me is why are they playing him in the first place?

He lacks fire, and I have a sense he's a real dude brah in the locker room. Probably one of the cool guys, smokes weed, bangs bitches, the good life, can't hate. Just terrible demeanor for a QB to have if you want a winning team.

I fully expect Browning to come in and be the odd man out, not have enough cool factor, etc... until he makes it self evident you want to win, you want to make the league, you follow the motherfucker who demands the job get done right. You need to give a fuck to be successful.

My biggest gripe is Miles simply has the "I don't give a fuck" vibe and you cannot have that persona lead your team.

Miles lost me after the georgia state week. When he came out after the game and openly said he didn't think guys were going hard, taking it serious, etc and that he needed to do better as a qb I knew he had zero chance to be a success. A QB does not come out and say people were fucking around and I just looked the other way(or joined in more than likely). A QB is the douche on the team who acts 45 when he's 20. Some teammates may not like him, but they will when he gets them the ball, or wins all the time, or is prepared in crunch time.

When you spent your whole offseason suspended, and a few games in you're allowing your team to dictate the lazy attitude in practice you're not a leader at the QB position. Maybe he can be a TE, or something else on the field but the guy doesn't look like he prepares for shit during the week b/c he regularly has no idea what is going on from the defense. As if that isn't self evident from his lack of ability to throw more than 3 yrds down the field or find the 2nd and 3rd progression during a play

Really good post, but I don't give them a pass. The offensive coaching sucked. It was horrible. Like Charles said on the recruiting board it goes hand in hand. It's part of their job to make Miles a confident QB. That is what practice is for. This is now twice, late in the season that the two minute drill was comically bad (also UCLA). Some of that, IMO even most of it, falls on the coaching.

Bonaparte and Strausser have strong track records of developing players. The WR play actually improved throughout the year. Smith doesn't have the track record so he's more in the prove it mode and this year isn't helping his case. But he's not going to be door.ass.out at this point. Just not going to happen.

You can lead a horse to water but that doesn't mean the horse will drink. You would absolutely have to think that the coaching staff would be teaching the 2 minute drill to be better than what we saw. Has it ever looked that poor at Boise under Petersen? Absolutely not. At some point, we need to stop making excuses for Miles needing to be coached up better and just come to grips with hte fact that he's just not good enough at the QB position.

Now, I do think that there are a few tweaks that could have been done to the offense to make it a little bit better. But none of those adjustments would have been a significant difference.
 
Road nails it on the 2 minute front. Most inept hurry up I've ever seen. I was at the grand opening of the new Husky stadium against Boise and they were running tempo just as fast as us that day. One of the quickest play to play games i've ever seen.

Peterson knows how to do it, but clearly the message isn't being delivered properly or Miles doesn't have the ability to run it. I think I know which theory is more correct.

Miles isn't very talented and he doesn't have the intangibles to make up for it. I've come to grips with that.

That said, it's presumptuous to say coaching didn't play a large role. You have seen first hand a QB that sucked one year go to New York for the Heisman ceremony the next year. Boykin is still a somewhat limited QB, but coaching is very fucking important.
 
There are two massive differences between Boykin and Miles:

1) Boykin has a very strong arm

2) Boykin clearly looks like he gives a shit and is a clear leader of the offense

I absolutely agree that there were some tweaks that could have been done to help the offense out just a little bit (for example, I would have preferred a more straight ahead running game), but in the end, the ceiling for an offense with Miles as the QB is average and to get to there you're going to need a lot of great pieces around him.
 
Maybe I'm missing something, but did people expect Miles to suddenly become a good qb between Wazooo and the Cactus Bowl?

Sounds like someone doesn't recognize the importance and effect of 15 extra practices.

But no, I don't think anyone with any sense expected that.
