The cost is a bit of a chicken or egg thing. If it weren't filled with commies running the government it wouldn't be so expensive to live there. I wouldn't move there for political reasons, even if I had Bezos money. Will be leaving WA in a couple years for the same reasons.
If Hawaii was on the list I would've voted for that state and I would love to live there amongst the hippie commies and locals who hate whitey.

Not entirely true through. Yes, the commies drive up the cost of housing by restricting too much land from development, but the most desirable real estate close to the coast was always going to be expensive AF. It's too nice climate wise and there's too much money chasing the same dirt.
There still are affordable pockets. Axe @RaceBannon . Temecula has a nice climate w/o La Jolla or Del Mar prices.

The national figure is that 25% of SF home costs are due to regulation. I would assume in CA it's probably pushing closer to 40% at this point. That's gotta be a few hundred grand, at least, for a median home in the state. I will grant you that their costs will always be higher than Kansas because of demand, though. Probably will do a lot more traveling to CA once the kids are at an age where we can tolerate the flight with them since it's the shortest trip to a sunny state.*
*Although we should be door. ass. out. to a sunnier state by then.

I'd have to read into the subject more. I think the reg driven % of cost is also gonna vary dramatically (even in CA) based on Zip Code in price point. I mean I doubt 40% of a $12,000,000 SF in Newport Beach is due to restrictive zoning laws or regs that affect building cost per sq ft (some of it is, but not 40%). With the primo dirt it's a supply and demand thing. There's a reason why DFW and Houston are so much cheaper than coastal CA and it ain't all related to communism.

The trade was a big house priced reasonable and good schools for the longer commute
House prices are out of control there because it's safer and cleaner. New homes still have the added costs and tiny lots.

I'm just pissed Nevada didn't even make the poll, the state with the most mountains and valleys in the country sans Alaska. Anything other than California is a joke. There's a lot of cultural stuff to shit on there but the fact everything in California is in one state is straight up lunacy. One of the coolest things to me is that you have maybe the world's most famous city which is just fucking gigantic - LA County has millions more people than all of Washington and a massive portion of California is some of the most rural places in the world it feels like.

Nevada is the most obvious one to not make the cut. Yes, there are few stunning mountainous areas- i.e., Tahoe, Great Basin National Park, etc. The Ruby Mts are some of the best heli skiiing on Earth. But most of it is barren wasteland good for mining and blowing up nukes. GTFO outta here with the playas! That's for Burning Man Freaks like @UW_Doog_Bot .
New Mexico is a little trickier. It's got some beautiful mountains, but is it really beating out CO, WY, MT, etc in this regard? No. As far a Southwest scenery goes, it's not beating out AZ or UT.

I'm probably just a homer. The Rockies and associated ranges make for some high elevation scenery that Washington can't quite match, even in the northern Cascades. They don't have an ocean there though and everything turns to shit fast on the east side of the Rockies
