You're right in that it is how he's been portrayed, but I've seen a lot of interviews and have read a lot that Dole was really known for being a 100% funny guy with a super quick wit. The other thing that his public persona belies, which as you say is in part a function of the media, is that he's the ultra serious hard ass, when apparently the opposite is true. Much of what I've read about Dole is that he was an emotional and very warm guy.

A real statesmen of the sort we can always benefit from having.
