If he had played safety, maybe he would still be starting in the NFL.
Recently rewatched highlights of the 2013 Oregon game after talking with @DerekJohnson about it and Mariota had his best game I could remember passing but he also just stood there for ages waiting for some JAG receiver to get open for the most part. What stood out more was how terrible the Husky OL was and then I looked up the depth chart and realized even when things have been bad recently how far things have come.
Not sure Mariota could have beaten out Lockner though. More heart.

Mariota’s parents let him visit UW after he had committed to Oregon. Marcus wanted to change his commitment to Washington after visiting UW.
His parents refused to let Marcus renege on his commitment to Oregon . . . Old school thinking . . . Your word is your bond.
