As of today, April 15, 2026, there has been a major breakthrough on this issue. Governor Kathy Hochul and New York City’s new mayor, Zohran Mamdani, have reportedly reached an agreement on a new tax targeting high-value second homes in the city.
This marks a significant shift, as Governor Hochul had previously resisted several of Mayor Mamdani’s proposals to tax the wealthy.

This type of tax proposal is one that the voters will like. Honestly, I think WA should do the same for out of country investors who buy properties here (aka, Chinese and Indian tech money). There are a lot of properties on the Eastside that are owned by non-US citizens who don't actually use the properties.
