A buddy of mine is a barge captain. He lives in western WA but pilots barges on the Mississippi. He works 10 days on, 5 days off, 10 on, then 15 off. One 10 day shift is a long haul and the other is working the same stretches, over and over, where you have to be certified (?) because of hazards.

The old rumor is that Huey Long had the first bridge over the Mississippi R. at Baton Rouge built low enough that ships and tankers couldn’t pass under it. All cargo had to be moved by rail or barge from that point.

It’s named after him.
