Jimmy Fallon is probably the funniest out of all of them. I don't know how Leno stayed on the air for so long. Good riddance. He was not at all funny.
I interned on a late night show a few years ago, so I am going to go late night superiority guy in this thread. I have a couple friends who work for Kimmel and Conan. I probably have more interest in these shows than most, but these shows are often pretty boring. There's really no point to stay up and watch them because if anything good happens, it will be online the next day. I leave them on as background noise because I work a lot late at night.
The key is having good guests, preferably funny ones who are quick witted. The pretty actresses are often the worst guests and they created a lot of stress for everyone when they were coming on because everyone knew the show was going to suck. Halle Berry was the worst guest on one of these shows I ever saw. A lot of the A list guests suck because they have PR teams and almost never say anything noteworthy or controversial.
I would rank them like this.
1. Letterman- A little too much old man humor at times, but he's good. I like his crabby humor and that he is always miserable. Dave does it his way. He isn't a shameless suck up like Kimmel and Fallon which makes him a better interviewer. He doesn't give a fuck about socializing with Hollywood types. Fascinating guy.
2. Kimmel- Good pranks, decent interviewer. Too big of a kiss ass though. Even when he gets in a little feud, he immediately backs down (see: Kanye West). He's laid back compared to Conan and Fallon, which is what I prefer if I'm watching tv at midnight.
3. Conan- Funny, but can be very annoying. Too manic for me at times. With a smart, funny guest he's money. 50 Cent and him was probably the best late night interview I have ever seen. He does better with lesser known comedians than the other hosts. Not a huge fan of his skits.
4. Fallon- Good skits. Talented performer who learned some good stuff at SNL. Terrible interviewer. He also looks like he is trying way too hard.
5. Ferguson- Terrible.
6. Chelsea Handler- DIAFF
I didn't rank Leno because he's leaving. I don't think many except for Midwestern simpletons actually like him. John Stewart would be #2, but his show is too political for me. He's a talent though.

Agree with everything you said except for the bolded part. We all know that CollegeDoog is late night superiority guy since he's an expert on literally everything. Despite being 20 he's an investment genius apparently.
I agree with your order and never did get the fixation of Jay Leno. Letterman when he has a good guest is still the best. He often mails it in and actually doesn't ever record a show on a Friday(all his Friday shows are recorded that previous Monday as he'll record two shows on Monday's to have a four day week).
Also with the internet and mainly YouTube there is no incentive to stay up as you guys said if something interesting happens you'll see it online or all over the news the next day.
I still remember in my youth seeing a then skinny Drew Barrymore flash her goods to Dave on his show.
18-49 is the only demographic the networks care about. That said, despite Leno being known for attracting only old people, he was still #1 in the ratings, including 18-49. The Tonight Show brand helps because of it's history with viewers, but I suspect there will be a drop off in ratings when Fallon takes over.
Late night has changed. Fallon, Kimmel, and even Conan have videos that go viral online. They are killing it with their YouTube channels. Leno and Letterman are pretty much nonexistent with online content. That's part of the reason NBC is pushing Leno out even though he is still #1 in the ratings.
I think it will end up being a mistake, just like it was with Conan. If Leno had any balls at all, he would have told NBC to fuck themselves when he got pushed aside the first time and went to Fox or another station and tried to stick it to them. Why would you replace the #1 guy, especially when Fallon is already getting good viral numbers in the 12:35 slot?
You are spot on about Fallon and Meyers attracting the same demographic, but I doubt it will be a huge boon to Letterman. Fallon and Seth Meyers are both Lorne Michaels' guys. Michaels is loving that he will run every prominent late night show on NBC. For being pretty boring shows, the dynamic and power plays of late night tv are very entertaining.

I actually like Leno's stand-up, but I doubt I've seen a full show since ca. 1998.
Letterwoman usually blows, and even though I'm liberal on some issues, his activism is annoying. He was pretty good in the 80s and early 90s. Back then it started at 12:30, but my brother would tape it. He was edgy, sarcastic, wild...probably got away w/ a little more due to the timeslot.
