Why does it matter if people were on board with the Jimmy hire when it happened?

After plenty of evidence he's very clearly a disaster really on all fronts.

It matters in the context of assessing Jen Cohen’s aptitude for being an AD. A good AD would’ve conducted a national search and weighed that against promoting Jimmy, even if she (and most of the fans) were confident that Jimmy was the right guy.

But she skipped that step out of either arrogance, incompetence, or fear of dealing with the media circus that would’ve come up had the Pete retirement been announced without a successor already named. None of which are good looks for her as an AD. She went with the easy path for her, knowing most of the fanbase would be optimistic about it.

Her biggest sins as an AD, though, are rather easily the blind contract extensions that she gave to the entire football staff after a nothing COVID season.

Your point is taken in that context. I was asking the question hoping that it wasn't a finger pointing exercise of division.

Basketball and football are both disasters by any measure. That in and of itself always should mean you need a new AD at any college worth a shit at all. (I guess that last part is up for debate).

The counter to that is, did OU and tOSU conduct national searches prior to promoting Riley and Day? I could probably find out but I recall it was a pretty swift change at both schools. The difference obviously is those guys were OCs and I did have some slight concern that promoting a defensive minded coach in today's CFB would be a mistake. However, I had no idea Jimmy's vision for an effective offense would be this shit show we have right now.

Good points. I'm not defending Cohen at all and being in her position she should have performed the due diligence. From a fan's perspective it made a ton of sense on paper. Dig a little deeper though and you'll see Lake's experience in coaching prior to hitching his wagon to CP was dubious at best. He was the DBs coach for some god awful teams including the 1-10 2004 Gilby UW team and the 0-16 2008 Detroit Lions team.

Jimmy is a good/great DB coach that got lucky Kwat was willing to be his training wheels for so long and then lucked into a HC position when Peterson quit.

Makes sense why he seems so lazy (strength/conditioning, game planning, coaching hires, recruiting), he thinks success or failure sits on a knife edge made out of luck.

The problem with Jen hiring Jimmy isn’t that she hired Jimmy IMO

It’s that I guarantee she didn’t ever consider that Pete would step down or leave like he did (which in his position is 81% chicken shit to give really no notice just gone) so therefore she didn’t have a list made up of what her options were.

If she did and Jimmy was the top of the list that’s an indictment on her hiring decisions that we already know sucks ass

If she did and all her top options turned her down and Jimmy was left then so be it

But I think we know that the reality is that she was blindsided and made a rushed panicked hire in the name of continuity

Jimmy would land on his feet with a good college DC job, maybe even a pro one. He’s a pretty good football coach. What he is not, is a head coach. He sucks at that. His hiring has been horrible, the recruiting is horrible, and most importantly, his record shows he sucks.

Not changing coaches is going to have them recruiting their asses off just to keep talent on the roster and field 85. It’s about to get real.
