One thing I failed to mention that could have a big factor here is SC's scholarship situation. I assume SC will have at least a few more schollies to give this year than last, which will make it easier for them to show these types of kids the love throughout the process. Had SC had 5 more schollies last year there's a real shot we don't get any of Tuli, Irvin and Kaho.

Assuming they have more to play with this year, we definitely need to close Criddell early.

No. They had open scholarships for all of those players when they committed or flipped to UW. Limited scholarships at SC didn't help UW at all.

But they were clearly hoping for someone better with at least Kaho and Irvin's spots and arguably Tuli's (they seemed to be higher on Togiai) which is why they didn't go hard after those kids. Had they had 5 more spots they'd have gone harder after at least a couple of them and not left room for UW to swoop in.
 
I count about 16 seniors-to-be on the USC depth chart, although I could be over counting a walk-on or two. Either way, I assume ~5 additional spots will come on top of that due to early entries, attrition, and career ending back injuries (thanks Ivan!).

They will take close to a full class. Time to put our big boy pants on. When was the last time 2/3rds of our serious target list was being heavily recruited by USC?

No, you're literally just making shit up. At the time Kaho committed to UW he could have easily committed to SC and they would have taken him in a heart beat. They fought their asses off to seal the deal with Irvin and to prevent Tuli from flipping. Togiai eliminated SC and decided between UW and OSU. Togiai had nothing to do with SC's recruitment of Tuli. SC scholarship limitations had nothing to do with the recruitment of those guys. They were all top of the board recruits for them as they should have been.

I'm not talking about at the time that they committed. I'm not saying USC wouldn't have taken them. I'm saying if SC had had 5 more schollies to play with throughout the process they could have pursued them much more aggressively and closed the door when they had the chance. As it was, with their limited schollies, they didn't show a ton of love and left the door open for UW to swoop in and present ourselves as a viable option. We did, and beat SC head to head for all three of them. But we had the advantage that we had more schollies to play with this year. That's unlikely to be an advantage for us next year.
