I'm definitely not counting on an Oregon demise, but Alabama sucked before Saban, Florida sucks now. Same with Texas. It can happen to anyone.

I agree with almost every single thing you said, but the italicized caught my attention.

I don't think we know what Helfrich will or will not do. For all we know, he might be a ten-year guy who has the running. The only body of evidence we really have is this year, and this year's Oregon team is different from the Kelly iterations. A couple of things to consider that differentiate Helfrich from at least Coker:

- Coker inherited a team that probably represents 100 pro bowl appearances and at least one, possibly 3, PF HOFamers/unprecedented amount of talent. Oregon is not even close. Helfrich had more to do with Oregon's success this year than Coker did Miami's in 2001. Apples and Oranges.

- Helfrich's Oregon team is different than Kelly's. They depend less on tempo and zone read and are a much more physical offense. Moreover, Mariota has evolved under Helfrich's watch. He also had to replace a D coordinator and himself as O coordinator, and it appears he may have done that somewhat well. We'll see.

- Helfrich has also had the opportunity to coach his team out of adversity. Oregon could have folded it in after the Arizona loss and after losing so many starters. But they didn't. Kelly didn't do that with a phone call from Philly. You have to give the HC credit for that.

- Helfrich has recruited. Period. He got Mariota and he got Freeman, among others.

To be clear, I'm not saying this guy is heading to the cfb HOF. But his body of work thus far makes it far from clear that he's destined to shit the bed. Lambo was fucking up with one of the most talent-laden Husky squads I can remember.

Finally, this is where I think most Huskies confuse reality from what they want to happen: Oregon can now make a big-time hire. Make no mistake. The money is there, the name is there, the trophy case is there. There's no reason why they can't pull in a solid hire like Petersen if Helfrich needs to be dismissed. The article I pasted from in the OP mentioned that with added funds, they've been able to pay their Assn't HCs at the 15th percentile, whereas before they were at the 39th percentile. Money matters. That's a HUGE differentiator from my Canes. Miami's athletic department, particularly football, represents suction, not production. Their budget has historically lagged. Without Miami's access to premier talent within one zip code, they would be nowhere because they can't pay top dollar. They cannot do, for example, what Michigan just did. Someone has to want to do there because they know what they can do with the local talent, and that someone is almost always on their way to somewhere else.

Of course all programs go through cycles, and Oregon will come back down to earth, as early as next season. When I say they aren't going anywhere, I mean that as long as they are thinking along the lines of what I posted in the OP, they aren't going to disappear because that's how you stay competitive - never resting on your accomplishments and staying hungry. I do not think they'll be a bottom feeder again any time soon absent a nuclear bomb going off in the program. They're recruiting well and there has been a paradigm shift in the culture.

There was actually a really good article in the Register Guard talking about how Hefrich responded to the Arizona loss. I'm coming around. Looks like he might be able to coach after all
