I was explaining this to my bff the other day. The guys that actually built programs into a champion like Paterno, Bowden, Osbourne, and even Don James needed twenty or more years to do it.
Guys like Saban, Carroll, Meyer, Tressel, and Stoops won one right away but they were at programs that someone else completely laid the foundation for.
Oregon started being mentioned nationally in 1998. 1994 was a cute little team that had a miracle year. Injuries stopped title runs in 98 and 2007. Besides those years and the couple years recovering from Tedford the Ducks were in the mix going into November every year. If you look at those legend coaches that built programs their trajectory is about the same as what Oregon has been since 98.
It was never going to happen overnight, but it's still on the right course.
Ah yes, Oregon's 2007 NC. The one where their fans conveniently forget they gave up 26 points per game in conference play. But Dixon's knee is why they didn't win the NC.
Did I say they would win one in 07? No, I said injuries were the reason they weren't a contender in November. That's what you have to be to win one. Just as the very first playoff showed us the best team doesn't always win the title. Under the BCS Florida State and Bama would have played for the title last year and Oregon would have played tOSU. Who gives a fuck who wins the pillow fight for the "National Championship" and tOSU beats Oregon so the talking fuck bags say the cliche "Ohio State probably deserved a shot but Oregon just wasn't there this year." Which would have all been bull shit.
How many times was this fuck up made since 1998? Probably more than we'd like to believe.
Now more than ever being a contender in November is the only thing that matters. The chances of winning a championship have now doubled which is enormous for a program like Oregon.
Injuries stopped title runs in 98 and 2007.
Thats what you said. Title run is quite a leap from contender status.
Oregon has had an amazing 6-8 year run. I'll have to check with my metrics guy as to how it stacks up versus the dynasties over those periods. Its almost a statistical aberration that they did so well yet didn't win a NC.
The playoff now changes the dynamic but Oregon's biggest problem is Helfrich is a fucking egghead who will steer Oregon's regression.
We'll always have the HTBMC SRS Natty.
