Husky legend hits the portal

CSB time...

Back in the early 2000's I went walking down Haight Street in SF to Golden Gate Park looking for Kezar Stadium where Hugh played in the 50s and a famous scene of Dirty Harry was filmed. I was saddened to learn it had been torn down in 1989 and replaced by some tiny HS football stadium with a track.

T’s and P’s. Always tough to lose a classmate

I met Hugh about 40 years ago when a starter at a golf course pages him to the clubhouse (from the putting green).

Starter guy introduces me and says I am a huge fan and that I wanted to meet him.

I was embarrassed as hell but he was really nice and introduces me to the next great husky tailback (his grandson).

I know CSB. My one brush with game/greatness.

It just occurred to me that I never tried to interview him, when I was going through my interviewing ex-Huskies phase.

Hugh brought in the NIL era. Who knew? One of the first college players to take a pay cut to play in the NFL. Helluva a baller back in the day.

Worked with his daughter many years ago. Heard many great tales. The paycut thing is absolutely true. If you ever get a chance to watch some old footage, Hugh was crazy good.
