We didn't keep the Southern half of (i.e., Old) Mexico for 2 reasons primarily:

1- Manifest Destiny works best when you grab land that is sparsley populated (Hi @Swaye ) or not at all. Possession is 9/10ths of the law.

2 - The Northern States would have never allowed our incorporating that much southern land- i.e., more territory in which to expand slavery.

Disagree. Look, from a policy stand point, I think we need to pretty much close the gates for 20 to 30 years on massive low skilled immigration. Let the melting pot go to work and give lower skill native workers a chance to catch up. But a more skilled operator on the right, could get this done without calling those places "shit holes". That's just counter-productive.
