Kobe by then already had 3 rings. Yes I know everyone argues about how he had Shaq which is true, but he ended up winning 2 more (But he had Pao!!!11!!).

Stats are only a piece of the puzzle. Kobe had the stats and winning accolades already back then.

Just because people debated it doesn't mean it was an actual debate. Once upon a time people debated James Atoe's first round potential as well.

T Mac was very good, perhaps hall worthy. He was never in Kobe's class.

Kobe obviously has had a better career, and was probably a little better from 2001 to 2004, but it was not by a large margin. I don't think it was all that crazy of a debate for a few years. McGrady was really, really good when he was on the Magic. If not for all the injury issues, he would be a sure fire Hall of Famer.
