I know some self-proclaimed centrists and independents and they are incredibly soft-minded, non-confrontational with a pile of delusionality. Think of Snow and the PMS housewives that would ignore their ostensible policy preferences and vote for that nice smiling dementia patient versus that mean orange man who continually brings up hard choices to make. They wouldn't cheat to win an election and they can't imagine that any person with a college education and working for the good of the people would do that.
