Play the semi finals on Dec 22nd or so, then play the national championship game at 5pm pacific on Jan 1st
 
Idea really doesn't work since most schools have Finals leading up to mid December. I can't imagine most coaches will be willing to sign up for getting their team ready for such a game at that time frame.

Additionally, and to a lesser concern, I expect ADs to not be on board with this plan as the travel demands required for supporters becomes challenging.

It's a great proposal for Joe Fan watching the games on TV ... terrible for those that are involved.
 
I love the idea. Most schools will be done with finals before the 15th, giving each team a clear week+ to prepare for the semi-finals. And a 5PM Pacific kickoff for the finals on the 1st is perfect.

If you were a football coach, would you prefer your students to be preoccupied with activities leading into Finals or a new Quarter/Semester?

If you were a football coach, would you prefer 1 week of practice for a meaningful game or 2 weeks?

If you were a football coach, would you want the Christmas holidays getting in the middle of your preparation?

From the fans perspective, this would be great. But there's no way that you'll get the coaches/ADs to sign off on this. Comparing end/start of the academic period as being equal is insanely FS in terms of importance for ANY student.

Student-athletes comprise like 15% of an elite team roster. GTFO. You can make up your Swahili and Human Sexuality final later.

The "playoff" really does need to be expanded. Stanford would have done some serious damage this year had they been able to get in as a conference champ. Still, this year's game was paired about as good as one could hope for. Better lucky than good sometimes .... Hi 12's.

Somehow every other level manages to have their 16 game playoff in December during finals. It can easily be done. March Madness happens while quarter system schools have finals and they make it work. Sure, corches probably wouldn't like it, but that's basically been the argument against a 16 team playoff and it's just as FS now as it is then. As someone pointed out it's better than the current situation with one team being on break and another team being in class for the championship.

The problem with the idea isn't how it might affect finals as @creepycoug nailed. The problem is how it would affect the Rose Bowel. I'm willing to destroy the Rose Bowel for a REAL 16 team playoff, but not for this 4 team bullshit. Keep it like it is, just move the first round to January 2nd.

I agree, if you're going to have a playoff, make it a real playoff, which means at least 8 teams, though 16 would be more fair and more likely to vet a true #1.

BTW, IMO, the Rose Bowl died with the BCS. It was a special bowl game prior to that, starting out as the "best" of the West vs the "best" of the East game. Even after the PAC/B1G tie in, it had serious gravitas. In fact it had real negotiating power during the Bowl Alliance era, often throwing a major monkey wrench in the MNC sham, but they opted to toss that in the crapper by agreeing to be part of the BCS. It's been an also ran bowl game ever since, which really is too bad.

The argument to increase the size of the playoff beyond four is $$$ and entertainment not discovering the mythical one true champion.

Agree there's a tipping point but I don't agree beyond 8 is that point. We saw last year that there was at least one legitimate title contender left out of the playoff (Baylor) and almost certainly one this year (Ohio State). I think 8 is the best number for ensuring you find the best team for the title. But if you go 8 the bowels are basically destroyed at that poont anyway so you might as well go 16, let every conference champion in and the best 5 at large teams and have some fun. So yeah entertainment is the argument there. But it's like in CBB, does the 64 team format do a worse job of finding the real champion than a 32 team format would? I doubt it. Nobody from the bottom 32 is winning the title more than once every 20 years. I doubt the bottom 8 would win it more than once every 15 years or so in CFB either. It would be fun to find out.
