Ducks head coach Mark Helfrich told me on the ESPNU College Football Podcast that he has ceded the play calling to offensive coordinator Scott Frost. Helfrich delayed making a decision until he and Frost went through spring practice and figured out how best to work together. Helfrich said he will maintain input, and the Ducks’ veteran staff means the program will never veer off course. But it’s another thing that will change from the very successful past four seasons. BTW, did you watch the 2nd half of the Alamo Bowl? Riley made Sark look like Chuck Noll in comparison. They gave up what, 6 sacks in the 2nd half with a 2 score lead and left their worst OL in single protection vs their best pass rusher? Riley Fucking Stupid.

Shit, morons like idawg were saying Reilly was better than Carroll years ago when Pete was winning 11+ games every year. It's not that he was called underrated, it's that some people actually thought he was great and he is not even close to that.

There should be no problem with a head coach calling plays, provided he is good at it (example: Urban Meyer, Chip Kelly). The problem is Sark sucks at it.
 
Reilly seems like he's very good at being a good coach but doesn't have that extra thing that turns good coaches into championship coaches. I could see him doing better at a UCLA or UW (routinely top 25) but not being able to field top 10 teams in multiple years.
 
Oregon has so much momentum right now that we won't know what kind of coach Helfrich is for at least 2 years. Who knows if he'll be able to fend off the coming resurgence from USC & UCLA.

Meanwhile, I think this is a key year for Shaw at Stanford. They won 8 games last year by a TD or less and were not as dominant as they were in 10-11. They also lose some key seniors after this season. Everyone is jumping on their nuts now but I see them having trouble getting 10 wins. I think they could win 9 this year and only win 7-8 next year.

I may be changing my ind on Helfrich. He agreed to be interviewed by Softy yesterday (strike 1) and I got to hear the interview. He came off as very Sark-esque. He sucked UW's dick for a while, talking about how UW owns the series and how he "fondly" remembered UWfans singing Tequila on the Ducks home turf. He also talked about how great UW was going to be this year. He sounded like a real nice guy, let's all have fun coach who tries to make everyone happy. This usually spells out "loser". Couple that with the fact that, aside from Kelly, his stints were with Colorado and with Dirk Koetter at ASU so he's been around losing programs quite a bit.

The thing is, coaches like Chip are rare. There are not many great coaches floating around college football. Some (especially doogs) make a huge deal about Phil Knight, Nike, the uniforms, and Oregon's great facilities. There's no question, all of those help, but it was Chip who took the Ducks to the next level. I think it is pretty unlikely Helfrich is anywhere near as good as Chip.

Oregon is rolling right now, but it will be tough to sustain. Everyone thought Nebraska would keep rolling after Osbourne, Miami with Coker (they did for a few years), Florida after Spurrier. It's just more examples of how vital the coach is, no matter the prestige of the program.

There is not much to suggest that Helfrich is a great coach. As mentioned, he has worked for Hawkins at Colorado, and Koetter at ASU. I get it that he will continue to run Chip's system and that will help, but Solich ran Osbourne's system at Nebraska. Yes, Solich has soke success, but it was nowhere near the Osbourne level. The Ducks obviously have too much talent to fall off right away, but I think it is likely they will (to some degree) in a few years based on that it is very unlikely Helfrich is in Chip's league as a coach. The successor rarely is.

Osbourne and Nebraska are a very good example. Let it play out as always, but it should be interesting.

I agree I don't think he'll be another Chip which is rare to find. Non Quooks are realizing that as well.

While I don't think he's the next Chip I can see him being another Bellotti which was good enough to kick our ass five straight before he was D.A.O.

I also have confidence in Oregon's management that if he starts to slip they will replace him with someone who can get the job done. For being a big time program and being a big spender like Knight is they have yet to make that big splash of a hire or really even attempt to.

I think Riley at UW would resemble the Lambright years. Some years we'd be ranked(15-25 range, never top 10). A lot of 8-5's or 9-4 type of seasons with 1-2 ugly losses a year.

I'm sure now people would accept that but I wouldn't.
