I remember the first force shaping in the Air Force was slated for 250,000 people. The Air Force only has about 300k total right now. The Army and Marine cuts were much more severe. If you got in trouble you were gone or you could volunteer to just get out, or go into the Guard/Reserve. Almost all of us went into the Guard/Reserve but that wasn't paying any bills. A ton of us went to college on the Chapter 30 GI Bill, but that thing sucked balls.

You're four years removed from high school so everyone in your age bracket is either finishing or well ahead of you in college and you're at square zero with some experience no gives a fuck about because so did every other kid in that age group.

If you had no educational aspirations wildland fire, urban fire, or cop was pretty much your best options. Luckily I learned a very specific skill that is taught nowhere and used to land a cush government job as a civilian. The bullet sponges (the majority) didn't.

Now we have a boat load of guys that played police in Iraq coming to do it here. It is what it is.

Oh I'm sorry, do you know how to work on missile and guided bomb systems? I didn't think so. The University of Phoenix isn't going to teach you how to maintain AIM-9L/M's, AIM-9X's, AIM-120, AGM-88, AGM-65, JDAM, Paveway's, GBU-54, and SDB's. When you have a very needed, yet very rare skill set you get to call the shots. The security clearance for that isn't extremely difficult but it's above the level of the average defense worker or military personnel.

Sure they have a choice. But don't give a fuck because it's not their money. Which leads them to make poor choices. And the supply of money to waste is endless. That's what lack of competition does to an organization. And that's why there are no natural monopolies.

Sounds a lot like Microsoft when I was there from 98 to 2005. Lots of money to waste, lots of senior managers that had no idea what was happening in their organizations, and a lot of people with cush jobs just putting in their time waiting for their stock options to reach maturity. It wasn't the "owners" choice that it be like that... but the company was so large by then that the owners had no clue.

Natural monopolies might not last a long time, but they do come and go in or economy.

And waste and cush jobs can happen in any organization... private or public. From folks I know that had career's at Boeing... it was the same story there.

Before my time at Microsoft, I did a stint as a software developer in Olympia on a licensing system. Some of the hardest working folks I ever worked with.

MS didn't have a natural monopoly, but that's beside the point....To take your point further: If what you say is true, Microsoft had to change, or go out of business. The government has no such pressure.

And yes, there are people who work hard in the government. I never said ALL government workers have cush jobs..I said their should't be cush jobs in the government and when they exist, the government should work to eliminate them. You argue that because there are cush jobs in the private sector, it's ok that the government has them. That is a poor argument and you're not addressing the point. Government waste. Government waste is more grievous than private sector waste because of the reasons I have already stated. (private sector has more incentive to flush out waste) Also, all government spending is paid for from taxation which forces the taxed to bear the burden with less purchasing power and less investment.

It used to be that the government paid less than the private sector and in exchange for job security, better retirement and benefits. Now, the pay scale is at least equal with the private sector and the sweet benefits remain. All the while government continues to grow and swallow up more resources without providing the economic growth benefit.
