Dude, you are better than this (maybe). I'm reading it like a balance sheet chart, which shows the ending balance in each period, which is also the beginning balance of the following period. Like how someone that reads and makes charts for a living would actually do it. 2008 with 30k means 30k at the end of 2008. That's what Obama inherited.
