Eventually, and sooner than lots of people think, more than a few large universities are going to forgo competitive athletics and return to an intramural sports athletic dept ~ Cal could be one of the first I think ~ I’m not intending to be snarky, I really do think it fits their perspective.
 
Oh, and the numbers are wrong ~ The retrofit and renovation of California Memorial Stadium (completed in 2012) officially cost approximately $321 million for the stadium upgrades. When combined with the adjacent $153 million student-athlete center, the total project cost exceeded $474 million. The project included installing shock absorbers to handle the Hayward Fault

UC Berkely is losing its cache academically as well. The scenario you describe won't help them. Berkeley people are up their own ass anyway.
