When was the last time we just went out and hired the best available coordinator with no connection to the program? Wilcox?

Jim Owens was coaching UW in Sept 1974. Unless you're saying you wanted him fired from Kent State
Take away three games in 2012 where the opponent hit 41, 52, and 52 (Arizona @iDawg ) and the Wilcocks D held teams under 20 on average

The position was vacant due to Nick Holt's termination days earlier,[9] and the announcement was made official later that night.[10] The Huskies were 7–6 in 2012 and lost in the Las Vegas Bowl. Washington was 9–4 in 2013 and won the Fight Hunger Bowl; Sarkisian left after the regular season for USC.

The Trojans finished 50th nationally in scoring defense (25.7 points per game) and 65th in total defense (400.8 yards per game) in 2015,[11] and Wilcox was terminated the day after the loss to Stanford in the Pac-12 championship game.[12]
On January 28, 2016, Wilcox became the defensive coordinator at Wisconsin, under head coach Paul Chryst.[13] The Badgers went 11–3 and won the Cotton Bowl with a defense ranked in the top ten in a number of categories.[14]

Wilcox was borderline elite under Petersen and Chryst. He was decent under CuttySark and Dooley. He was poor under Helton. Head coach matters.

I hated the annual blowouts with Wilcox. I agree, though, that it was probably a product of head coach. The whole team seemed unprepared whenever they walked out and grabbed ankles. Doing it three times per season gave me a bad taste in my mouth for Wilcox, though. Maybe unfairly.
I bet those blowouts were away games where sark did “the squat” on the sidelines, with jaundiced skin and purple eye bags.

I think this is a better hire than Wilcox by a decent bit. Wilcox was a bigger upgrade though.

UW was very lucky to get James. He was a finalist the year before for the Colorado job but Colorado hired Bill Mallory instead — James had been a DC at Colorado at some point in his career. On paper, Mallory had the better looking trajectory and had a better record at Miami Ohio than James had at Kent State. I still see the occasional Colorado old timer wax and wane about what might have been if they had hired James instead of Mallory.
It may have changed recently but that 9-2 record in 73 and MAC title in 72 were the first and only in Kent State history
