Haven't we fired every decent crew coach we ever had, because they called fat people fat, and other truthful "offenses?"
We've only fired 2 crew coach's in the past 30 years, both for the Women's team. Eleanor McElvaine was a train wreck in the early 2000's and ran the program into the ground. Ernst was a great women's coach in the 1980's before taking over the Men's team from 1988- 2007. He had a lot of strengths and a lot of weaknesses as a Men's coach but did win a couple of NT's (a more elite coach like we have now would have won far more). In 2008 he went back to coaching the women's team and did OK I guess, but probably wasn't the best fit long term. He did do some 'fat shaming' and it probably was called for but it's all about the messaging. The new coach Yazmin Farooq was a YUGE upgrade and won a NT in her first year- i.e., 2017.
