The purple helmet was a reward for outstanding players on defense. Kind of like the Buckeye on the helmet only way more stupid
 
Thanks for posting! I was 11 yrs old and remember watching that game on TV. Those players seemed larger than life at the time. I was probably wearing my Sixkiller jersey that afternoon. I never would have imagined how much college football would change over the years. R.I.P.
