Do your own fucking research. It's out there. However, be wary of biased sources, some have an agenda. Even the CDC. Unless you are planning to argue with a classic confirmation bias.
The point of this isn't if it is possible to get an STD or not, it clearly is, even if it's much much lower than you think and it is not a reason for the state to "protect" people from their choices and take their freedom. The article is about how to rethink this to make it safer and put less of a drain on our legal system then the current process, which does nothing to stop people from doing it, but it enables a more unsavory element to profit from it.
Of course the type of hooker matter and what you do with them matters. Bare pickling street crack whores in the 1 and/or 2 holes will eventually lead to a problem. As would doing the same with random drunken bar hook up. Chicks that bare pickle strangers would be high risk for STDs no matter if they do it for money or not. There are other types of hookers. High class escorts and the type the article talks about which get their business online and operate out of private residences. And using condoms lowers the risk to a very low level. Not zero, but fucking anyone bare pickle is never zero.
