If you had told me we would be 5-5 going into UCLA/Oregon I'd say that doesn't surprise me. But Jedd's constant excuses are chicken shit. He has to own that his gameplan/playcalling has been dog shit.
UCLA is a must win.
If we're not significantly better next year we will have to start looking for options.
What exactly are his excuses?
The truth hurts
Go look at the roster
The OL is full of JAGs and underclassmen (freshmen)
The DL is largely filled with JAGs
We have nominal LB depth
We are overstocked with WRs and DBs …
You can only do so much with this roster
The OL is the only position group that is legitimately below average and he's doing very little to scheme around it.
Players that would/could start on a top level team:
Boston
Jackson
Latu
Coleman
(Rogers sucks but in the right situation he's an accurate thrower and absolutely could be an advantage over your average FBS qb)
Valdez
Tunuufi
Bruener
Tuputala
Prysock
Becky London
Dixon
I also suspect the interior Oline has a guy or 2 that will turn out to be quite good if they have no glue eaters at tackle
Im sure you can nitpick these players but my point being this isn't a 5-7 team talent wise so the talent excuse is tired
The OL is young and inexperienced … those that are here are either cast offs from other programs or guys that haven’t shown any kind of elite ability on the field yet … I’d say there are no guaranteed locked in starters next year
You can’t say that TE is a fine position group when you only have 2 healthy and available options on the roster and 1 of them is a true freshman
Take those 2 issues and combine with a QB that lacks the horsepower to fit balls into tight spaces and there’s your red zone issues
As others have stated (so it’s more than my opinion) … there are a lot of JAGs at DT
If you go look at the games we lost that would be argued that should have been wins against Wazzu and Rutgers … a big common theme in those games was the inability to finish drives in the red zone
It’s not rocket science
And then when you layer on top special teams issues (a big byproduct of a young and not deep roster) … that’s how you get to .500
This team isn’t really that far off of where they should be … let’s say I give you one of Wazzu or Rutgers that we should have won … I could also argue that we shouldn’t have won the USC game
And as for the players that are starting or in the rotation on the rosters of the CFP teams in the Big10 … it’s far less than you’d think with only a couple players tops in positions where you could argue that they’d start
