Agreed. But beating someone to death in response to it doesn't quite seem to be an acceptable response. Would anyone be making this argument, and yes this defense is being made by a lot of people, if the races were reversed?

Of course you don't expect to get beaten to death and that is horrible. But you should probably at least expect a beating can and probably will occur, which, if you are not physically capable of handling properly (which obviously they weren't) it would seem that you should have some pause before trying. Sounds like this was a smart, suburban kid totally out of his element and probably should have had a bit better grasp of the actual world.

A simple beating would have been justified but what ended up happening wasn't just a fist fight. Beat him unconscious and then continued to stomp and kick him while he is knocked out on the ground. And then tried to prevent his friends from calling 9/11 and taking him to the hospital.
