Well Carson existed in a different media ecosystem. Very few channels, no internet for competition. So he's not the best person to compare Kimmel to.

Nonetheless Carson wasn't a hard left of center democrat like Kimmel. Carson didn't blame republicans for the James Earl Ray assassination of MLK Jr. Carson didn't blame republicans for the assassination of Bobby Kennedy or the attempted assassination of Reagan. Kimmel lied about the assassination of Kirk and lacked the stones to have an actual apology because he thought his lie was righteous. Plus Carson laid enough pipe to make Kimmel look like a soi boy.

I was watching Carson in my fraternity with 80 different channels to watch on cable. No one dared turn the channel when he was on. I agree things are denser now on selection but Carson wasn't exactly the only thing to watch and he was still averaging 9 million. There were two other choices for late night at the time. His numbers were pretty incredible and he never once delved into lefty political weaponization.
