I think it's mostly a lack of courage and classically conditioned fear of being different that drives most of it. Somewhere along the way, the lone rebel who stands his or her ground and sticks to his guns got massacred and erased from history by the weak-kneed, resentful sheep & authoritarians who's primary fealty is to demagogues who they think will give them power.
