Eason vs. Browning

Never watched film on Browning or Eason until today. I like Browning better and think he is going to be a better college football player. I won't be surprised if Eason is a bust given some of the circumstances.

Browning looks like a more natural QB, with good instincts and good anticipation. He also has good escapability. Eason looks like a big kid with excellent physical tools playing quarterback. Browning has played against better HS competition. In most of Eason's highlights there is no pass rush. Eason has the prototypical height, size, arm that scouts love. I know Eason has done well at the big camps.

Two other things. We know that Eason's dad is really involved. I read in a story that he was toying with the idea of moving down to Athens. Jesus Christ, I hope not for the kids sake or it will be Jake Heaps all over again. Is the dad trying to relive his career through the son? And how many QB's do well in the SEC versus other conferences? How many do well right away? Seems like the kid will feel a lot of pressure at a real football school and from his own dad. And there is a 5* QB from Georgia who is committed to Georgia, who will be one year behind Eason.

My bet is we didn't get Eason because the dad wanted some special treatment or attention from Pete and Pete was slow on the trail, which obviously didn't help.

Not trying to absolve Pete or UW of blame because losing Eason is a big fuckup. But honestly I think Browning is going to be better. I think he's a better quarterback while Eason is a better pro prospect. I think Browning is going into a better situation and will feel much less pressure.

I don't know anything about Eason, but agree Browning is going to be good and has the intangibles that make a QB.

I've said it previously and I stand by my gut saying that in 3-4 years we will barely look at Eason as a miss. Something about how his recruitment has gone coupled with the recent success of QBs from the State of Washington tells me that he's got bust written all over him. Chest spit it out in a TL, DR version that I agree with 100%.
 
In everything I've read about Eason, it is mentioned that he is a prototype for future NFL QB. He has the physical tools to have a Stafford or Manning-type college career. He's built for the Heisman. It's not glossed over, however, that he has a long ways to go in terms of playing the position of qb. He throws the ball too soon, stares down receivers, isn't patient in the pocket, has accuracy issues, etc.

So essentially he ranks out at
Athleticism, Size, Arm Strength - A+
Decision Making, Awareness, Accuracy - B-

You can fix those things at the bottom, but it's not a given, and if you don't, you're a bust (see Gunner Kiehl from a couple years ago. Many said Kiehl was the best qb prospect to come around in a decade but he was a bust of the highest order. Despite his physical prowess, he couldn't play the position of QB). If the rumors about Eason having a posse/entourage that follows him around to camps, and his father acting as his promotions agent/recruiting coordinator are true, that also raises some red flags to me in terms of how well he will develop.

That being said, there is no guarantee Browning or Eason will be good/bad/ or neither. I wish we had both ( I did want him anyways) but I don't think Eason is a once in a lifetime QB like some do.
 
I prefer to care more about Udub production than their NFL careers at Tampa Bay myself.

From what I remember of their hudl's. The big difference is arm talent. Eason is bigger and has the better arm. That's Brownings weak point - can he make all the throws with the right velocity? If not that severely limits an offense. One thing on Eason - nice velocity, but not the most picturesque of mechanics. Has a bit of the sidearm motion in his film and the TBS reviews at the opening noted it's still there.

I would say Browning looks more polished (his HS coach I believe was one of Cals better QBs), but Eason has way more upside due to arm talent. Not a lot of NFL upside to Browning IMO.

IMHO, Browning most compares to another Georgia QB (Aaron Murray) who was drafted I think by KC or the Redskins (he slid a little because of a torn ACL). If someone put a gun to my head and said guess Browning's post-college future, I'd say he'd be a solid NFL back-up and ok spot starter.

For whatever reason, I had no idea that Tony Eason is Jacob Eason's dad. His dad is going to be waaaaaaayyyy too involved with his son, in fact he already is all up in Georgia so he strikes me as a super high maintenance father:

"Skinny's" dad played college ball at Notre Dame ...

The Eason you are thinking of played at Illinois before going to the NFL
 
And perhaps the long and the short of my feelings on Eason can be summed up by the fact that he likes to be called "Skinny" ... something about that feels way too high maintenance to be a QB IMO

It would be great to have Eason for exactly the reason that you give yourself another option to come in and prove it ... and at this point, it's hard to not believe that whatever QB we get in this class (assuming we get one) will probably fall short of Eason.

I'm more pissed about the Eason situation from the perception standpoint of losing an in-state kid.

I do think that he's more likely to be a bust than a star. I don't like the high maintenance that his family and posse are appearing to be. It wouldn't shock me if Petersen saw that and decided that he wasn't worth the trouble and wasn't a fit in the program. If true, it sucks. But at the same time, Pete will get judged by the results on the field. If Browning is who we think he is and he follows it up next year with a high level recruit that is able to make the Browning to next QB transition seamless then eventually we'll all forget about Eason. But if Browning isn't the guy and/or we continue to struggle recruiting QBs, then Eason becomes a bigger deal and it's absolutely valid to criticize Pete to the point that it probably is a damning commentary on his tenure.
 
All that matters now is that we basically F'd up 2016 QB recruiting. I really like Browning, but I HATE not getting a QB every year. We will likely take an average QB this year and have a lot of pressure to get a good one next year.

If we land someone good next year, and Browning or KJCS show something this year, I will feel a lot better about life.

Thank goodness we have recruited OL so skrong (even with losing Eletise).
