Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco is on track to win re-election by a comfortable margin in results posted Wednesday, June 8.
Results published on the Riverside County Registrar of Voters’ website showed Bianco leading retired sheriff’s Capt. Michael Lujan 58% to 42%, with more than 177,000 votes tallied.
About 150,000 vote-by-mail ballots and 2,000 provisional ballots remained to be counted going into Wednesday evening.[/b] And mail-in ballots postmarked by Election Day and received by June 14 also must be counted.
Bianco declared victory in a Facebook post.
“It clearly sends a strong message that identity politics and blatant lies during a campaign will not sway voters who are legitimately concerned about law enforcement and public safety,” he wrote. “Outside special interests and anti-public safety agendas have no business in the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.”

He also admitted to being a dues-paying member in 2014 of the Oath Keepers, a militia known for far-right views whose leaders have been indicted on charges stemming from the Jan. 6 U.S. Capitol insurrection. Bianco has defended the Oath Keepers but said he has no interest in re-joining the group.
Lujan, who retired in 2020 after a stint in charge of the Lake Elsinore sheriff’s station, called Bianco a political extremist and vowed to take a non-political approach to law enforcement.[/b]
