Donte Williams on Twitter

Interesting.

I dont want him at UW. I'd rather have good coaches who realize that being great recruiters is now part of their job too. It's not hard, in fact it's way, way easier than being a great coach.[/b]

Disagree with the bolded.

Yes you want the best coaches possible who are great in every area, but elite recruiting is an intangible skill that very few people have. It's ultra-competitive sales.

Turnover rates at high-commission jobs are insanely high for a reason, the best and brightest on paper can't fucking hack it. I'm ok with having a hired gun on staff who specializes in this area, particularly early on when you still need to sell the vision.

Ideally, once the train gets rolling the program will start recruiting itself more.

THIS

Recruiting is a different skill set all together. Being a great coach has a lot to do with schematics, development, making quick adjustments, timing, personnel management, analytics, etc. While recruiting is mostly about selling and being a social badass, which for some people is nearly impossible. Some coaches are great at one and not the other. Could you see Bill Belichick being a big time recruiter? Of course not, but he'd hire them.

You ideally want both. A great coach can get the most out of his players, but those players might not have a high ceiling because of the lack of recruiting. On the other hand, a bad coach might recruit well, but have underperforming blue chips. They most likely won't suck because the talent makes them have much higher floors. But in the end, both situations are not ideal.

If Deboner got Donte that would take care of concern #1 with the hire. Give him a fake title with a bunch of money and make him recruiting coordinator. Just don't make him DC and don't have him be the only DB coach.

Seriously, though. He was recruiting the entire defense at both Oregon and USC. I'm pretty sure he was responsible for both Thibedeaux and Foreman. He's Tosh-level, maybe a step up

Dude was apparently telling players he was going to be USC’s next head coach and we? think we? can get him as a co-DB coach?
Just make up titles. Co-DC, Associate HC, and DB coach. Just get him here. Money talks. Wife graduated from UW[/b].

His last twelve or so people hes following includes...

Lars Hanson
UW Athletics
Faatui Tuitele
Tracy Ford
UW Mens Basketball
Terell Bynum
Bookie
Trent McDuffie

When did he start following all these people? Recently? This seems to suggest something may be afoot.

I had thought I read somewhere that part of Lincoln Riley's deal was keeping Donte on staff

Williams’ wife, Dr. Jayna, got her undergrad at UW where she was a cheerleader. My friend’s wife was friends or frenemies or something like that with her.

Y’all would be fools to not hire Donte if Town Car isn’t retaining him. If you give a fuck about his coaching DBs or CBs or whatever you’re stupid. He’s not even a bad DB coach, but even if he was it doesn’t matter - because he’ll recruit a nun to a brothel.

Donte's USC Biohttps://usctrojans.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/donte-williams/5260 says that he has a son and is single.

  • BIRTHDAY: Sept. 1, 1982
  • FAMILY: Single; Son, King.
  • HIGH SCHOOL: Culver City (Calif.) HS
  • EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree, communication, Idaho State, 2006

So, maybe he and his wife are not together anymore?

Other than that, Donte Williams, who has more than a dozen years of experience coaching defensive backs and is regarded as one of the nation’s top recruiters, was named USC’s cornerbacks coach and defensive pass game coordinator in February of 2020. In December of 2020, he added the title of associate head coach.

Mario, Franklin, and Keith Heyward recruited Thibodeaux. But he did get Flowe, Dontae Manning, Mykael Wright, etc. He can beat tOSU and Clemson head to head for a recruit. I’d bet if he stayed at Oregon, it wasn’t a one sided decision, then Korey Foreman, Raesjon Davis, and Ceyair Wright are there.

The biggest downside is he’s full of shit and will cut corners. Not for the risk averse, but who doesn’t mind an occasional attempted murder here and there? It’s attempted, not like an actual murder.

Who was McKinley's primary recruiter? Dude's a baller.

Someone needs to let the missus know. Post from Thanksgiving. Maybe it was a bad turkey day and the bird wasn’t the only one getting stuffed so there’s been a Steve Nash-ing. Or she took being a head coaches wife seriously, like Colleen Bellotti or Candy Fisher.

Maybe her views on what to do with the Irish are costing Donte job opportunities. This isn’t the 1850s, you just can’t say shit like that.

Having been a D1 coach (different sport), I can tell you that, with time restrictions placed on practice / off-season, it is first and foremost about the HC, because he is the one who sets the culture...role model, respect, buy in, discipline, attention to detail, work ethic, recruiting. He (and, his staff) have got to deliver a consistent, winning message, every day, in season and out. With that in place, recruit your ass off...at this level, it really is about Jimmy and Joe. Shitloads of coaches (and message board members;>) can X and O, but if you don't have players, so what? Or, you get great "athletes", but don't develop them, making your scheme unworkable, or at best inconsistent. Adjusting scheme to your players is important as well.

There is a small window to develop project-guys, but if you have too many (the case for UW in the last few decades[/b]), you are treading water. Culture is mandatory, scheme is great, it means nothing if you don't have dudes.
SC has dudes, but from my view lacked culture, and maybe scheme. Oregon has complete buy-in to Mario's hype train, but the development and scheme have some holes. When talent is equal, scheme matters. Under-talented with great culture, scheme and development can beat talent IF under dog plays up, and talent plays down. It's not something to hang your hat on, for sure.

One of my former players became a D1 HC. He never bought into what we were doing, and tanked his senior year. Suddenly, he is calling the same coaches he ignored for help, on the most basic shit. But, he could sell snow tires in Miami, so he got the gig. Actually had some success, for a while.

Shaw and Chip didn't get stupid overnight...they have culture and scheme, they just don't have the players they need to be successful, currently. When things go bad, people (players, recruits, fanbase) start to question it. That is when culture and recruiting rise, or fall.

ATBS, know your strengths and weaknesses, and hire accordingly...and, as I mercifully finish this screed, Brian Kelly (and Brian Kelly) is (are) headed to the Bayou...

The 247 things aren’t always super accurate since head coaches can’t be listed as the primary recruiter, so it says Arroyo. Texas was his supposed area of expertise. It was mostly Willie. Jevon Holland, McKinley, and the average Steve Stephens aren’t a bad safety haul for one recruiting class.

"Coach Taggart is a real nice guy and he definitely has a vision," McKinley said. "It's definitely a family atmosphere up there with all of the coaches, the facilities are great and they have a plan academically to make sure all student-athletes are set up for success."
