Long story short Dick Hurt was ultra sanctimonious the whole time he was at WSU and embraced the Coug hating UW shit then bailed for a better opportunity. I don't blame him but he set himself up as this BS folk hero then just went and did what any coach would do.

Historically speaking, Wake Forest is a huge step down as far as a football program. The only advantage is that they're in the ACC. He'll need to succeed there pretty quickly so that he's ahead of the next round of conference realignment because Wake Forest is not going to remain in the upper tier conferences that can qualify for the playoffs.

WSU is in a really weird place right now. They pinned so much of their identity to hating UW and they're not in a conference with them anymore, they need UW to keep playing them in sports way more than the other way around, and like UW really needed DeBoer to stick around in a tricky transition, they probably needed Dick Hurt and Mateer to be heroes and help them stick it out. The Coug could probably be a solid Mountain West program in a few years but right now they still had some Pac-12 talent on their team but it's all going to leave and they're gonna probably take a while to build up with continuity and upper MW talent hopefully while not completely bottoming out.
The Wazzu Pullman party stuff is pretty fun but it's so isolated that the longer you're there it gets more segregated if you're not into joining a frat. It's also hard as fuck to get there and almost every other college town state U experience is more like Corvallis where it's comfortably outside of the state's main population hub but not a five hour drive (if you're lucky) without even a real regional airport. It was always maybe the weirdest and most difficult place in America to have power five sports played.

I initially thought realignment was going to work out OK, or even great, for Cuog and Beavis. I was clearly wrong. I underestimated how much they depended on being propped up by Pac 12 money. Without it they don't have anything that stands out over the Mtn West schools. The location, at least in WSU's case, puts them way behind some of the other schools.
It's looking pretty grim. OSU can maybe recover. I don't know about cuog.
Being in a conference with Gonzaga, Beavlet, Fresno, Boise, SDSU, Colorado State, is where they should be. Utah State even has been competitive. Utah belongs in such a conference and may go back. I would watch that conference, maybe. Maybe UNLV eventually goes.
They'll get one team into the playoff every year. They'll be on TV.
Some of these Beavlets like the ones I'm related to that want to take their ball and go home because they aren't together with UW, Oregon, SC anymore just need to suck it up or fuck off and do something else and stop being jilted lovers.
Coug and Beav have been propped up for a very long time. The only State schools remaining in power conferences are those with huge state populations (Florida, Ohio State, Penn State, and Michigan State) and even Ohio and Penn are kind of helped by having weird University ofs in their states. Then you have LSU which is aided I think by a weird Tulane being the University of thing and Mississippi State which is propped but by just always being an SEC school.
Utah is interesting. It's the fastest growing state in the last census and I doubt it's slowed down so they have growth potential and a region that likes football though they do have to share everything with BYU.
