Detlef Schrempf Finds Out His UW Jersey is Being Retired

The late Chris Welp also got his jersey retired. Welp was a Husky great, but retiring his jersey?
Methinks this might be Pat Chun playing some 4D chess in the fundraising department. This is weird timing somehow

I’m guessing Sprinkle is about to lean heavily on Europe for talent moving forward. Get Hannes drafted in the first round and show two Germans in the rafters. Build a narrative to sell to the Euros to grease the skids.

Great insight, you might have nailed it

Welp is the all-time leading scorer in Husky history.
Case closed.
So what? Gaskin is the leading career rusher, right? Is his jersey retired? Stan Emptermanan is the greatest football player in UW history. Is #90 retired? Napoleon is my favorite Husky of all time and arguably its greatest running back — is his number retired?
That's what the Husky Hall of Fame is for.

UW’s hoops history is paltry compared to its football history.
If UW football was at the same middling level as the basketball program over the decades, then absolutely you retire the number of a player like Gaskin.
It’s a matter of perspective, and you really can’t compare the two programs in terms of historical significance when it comes to individual players.
But anyone who was around when Welp was at UW knows that he is absolutely one of the most important players in the program’s history.
Clearly the AD agrees.

Clearly the AD is moving chess pieces.
