I think it's a good hypothesis, I just don't think we've seen enough to say it like it's a fact.

My point is not that it "works" necessarily (though I think it does if you read player interviews), just that that's what we do. We tell everyone they are playing BUCK or Chico basically.

I think in recruiting it's sort of an ante. Everyone tells kids they will be used all over the field. We tell kids that, too.

The *twist here is that I think—at least on offense—we do want kids to be hard to type. I think it's clearly to our advantage if everyone can conceivably play two positions. It makes it harder for D to adjust to your personnel.

I think Salvon might break us in that way. I think Trey Lowe is another Salvon in that way. A kid who will primarily be a RB, but also be able to go into the slot if we need him there.

It's in part why our ability to recruit high end TEs that are well rounded is so important for us. When we can go 2 TEs it creates so many issues. We have a solid 7 in the run game that forces teams to commit 8 to stop it and leaving our WRs operating 1 on 1. But what we haven't seen in this offense yet is that TE that really doubles as a strong pass catcher.

That formation can allow us to pound a defense in the running game OR split everybody wide and force guys to cover in space that aren't particularly good at it.

It's why it is so important to be multiple

USC runs the same defense except they play more base similar to our defense back in 2014. Their "Buck" is called "Predator" and it's the same position. Hasn't hurt them in recruiting. Oregon is running the same defense under Jim Leavitt and so will Cal under Wilcox. When UW recruits high school DE's to play Buck or Sam it's a compliment because it means they think they are athletic enough to drop and play in space.

He's a different kind of predator. Nansen is a teen boy predator and likely an adolescent boy predator whereas Porter Gustin plays Predator in USC's defense.
