This is pretty big. Leavitt's a good DC. Probably not as great as people wanted to argue he was when he left Colorado, but well above average. Hayward is a complete unknown. Maybe he'll be great. I wouldn't bet on it though.
My favorite thing about this thread is all the UO fans saying "Leavitt didn't get any recruits this year". How many coordinators are major players in recruiting? They exist (Tosh Lupoi, Jimmy Lake), but the Justin Wilcox/Pete Kwiatkowski guys who pull almost no one are just as common, if not moreso.
You don't fire a great coordinator because he isn't recruiting.
Strange move for Oregon IMO. Hard to see it paying off for them but I'll LIFPO.
I think it's more pointedly do you risk some smaller school scooping up yore best recruiter in Hayward as their defensive coordinator, or do you keep going down a path with a defensive coordinator who's a better Xs and Os guy but clearly wants out at the first opportunity?
It's not what I would've done. But I get why it happened.
